SIGHT ON SOUND at Argyle Fine Art
presents an afternoon and evening of
Afro-Celtic Rock and Storytelling with
Dr. Zoo
It’s hard to believe that Argyle Fine Art has been running it’s SIGHT ON SOUND series for almost a year now - it all started with a bunch of songwriters telling stories in a circle so we come full circle on Saturday, October 10th so-to-speak, with a storyteller in his own right: DR. ZOO! Argyle Fine Art is pleased to present Dr. Zoo - "Afro-Celtic Rock and Storytelling" - a fusion of African and Celtic music and rhythms: Paul Simon Graceland meets Great Big Sea at a Newfoundland Kitchen Party! Nominated 2009 ECMA World Recording of the Year.
On Saturday, October 10th come to Argyle Fine Art with family and kids and get involved in the performance workshop.Make sure to bring your drums and shakers at 2pm for just $5! Or come out in the evening, beginning at 8pm and party with the band at their exciting show. Tickets are just $15 for students and $20 for regular adults. Tickets are available NOW by phoning 902-425-9456 or emailing us at gallery@argylefa.com
Dr. Zoo is the vision of singer/songwriter Randal Arsenault from Newfoundland, Canada. For years Randal has lived and traveled in Africa, recently completing his doctorate of zoology on competition between white rhino, wildebeest, zebra and impala. After years of singing to zebras, Randal developed the musical genre "Afro-Celtic Rock and Storytelling". The 7 piece band includes Juno award winning Youssou Seck from Senegal (African drums and vocals), Ghanaian singer Nikki Hylton, Afro-reggae bassman Joe Hylton, Irish Multi-Instrumentalist Roxanne Young (fiddle/whistles), Sudanese guitarist David Kabbashi, and Reggae kit drummer Jim Johnston.
“Africa meets Newfoundland.... never thought it could work but now I can't imagine Dr. Zoo being anything other than what they are, a fusion of cultures that represent the diversity of Canadian music and once again proves that art based on personal experience always shines the brightest because it is authentic and from the heart. I hope to hear a lot more from Randal and the band in the years to come. They are truly something special."

Pretty Bird: New Work by Angela Carlsen

Angela Carlsen ventures away from her abandoned building work to explore the world of taxidermy in her upcoming exhibition, Pretty Bird.
Angela gained access to the storage facility at the Museum of Natural History and fell in love with the bird "study skins".
These stuffed birds aren't intended for display so they lack the fake eyes but somehow personalities are expressed on their faces.
The backgrounds are created using symbols and shapes translated from various tales of folklore and mythology surrounding the individual bird.
Displayed in vintage oval frames, these portraits are both attractive and sombre.

Passing Through: New Work by Gordon MacDonald
Click the Image, to see the work
It’s hard to believe that Argyle Fine Art is once again preparing for our annual solo show by one of Argyle Fine Art’s most treasured artists, Gordon MacDonald opening this Friday, August 14th, 7pm with PASSING THROUGH. For many of you, the name Gordon MacDonald has become a household name. He is by far one of the most talented landscape artists Nova Scotia has to offer, and if you don’t know his work yet, well….where have you been? Gordon’s work has been featured in magazines, most recently the award winning book Evidence by Ian Colford, and soon will be featured in the Nova Scotia Landscape book published by Nimbus Publishing and being released later on this fall at Argyle Fine Art.
PASSING THROUGH, is a celebration of the most recent body of work by Gordon–please come celebrate it with us this Friday evening. See a sneak preview of the show online Thursday evening, here on the website!
Passing Through will include a vast collection works, many of them smaller by Gordon MacDonald using a variety of mediums as many of you have grown accustomed to: working on canvas, board, and metal- his favourite being copper. Expect to see images from the Atlantic Provinces inspired by recent drives through over the years. Also expect to see a few figurative works; his first love.
We can not state enough time how wonderful this show will be and are very pleased to continue working with Gordon MacDonald at Argyle Fine Art. Indeed, he is part of our family down here and the best friend anyone could ever have. Coffee in hand every afternoon round 2pm, and one of the hardest working artists we have come to know. CELEBRATE!
Gordon MacDonald will also be planning another materials workshop in the fall. If you are interested in finding out more information, please contact the gallery directly.

Fairy Tales for the Dark of Heart
Women of the Forest: Photographic Collaboration by artists:
Elizabeth Kenneday and Susan Malmstrom
Show continues until August 10th
Click the Image to see the work
Argyle Fine Art is pleased to present the collaborative photographic works of Bear River based artist Susan Malmstrom and Sierra Nevada based artist Elizabether Kenneday. The idea of passing a photographic image back and forth between themselves via email, building up pictures layer by layer, arose from the desire to collaborate on a series in spite of the thousands of miles that separate them. There are no limits as to what each artist can add to her layer before returning it, and an image is considered a finished work of art by consensus. The works are meant to appear both realistic and dreamlike, creating a sense of distortion and prompting narratives within individual viewers’ own self-identity. SEE THE SHOW this Friday, July 24th at Argyle Fine Art, 7pm. Both artists will be in attendance.
It is this sort of dialogue that Elizabeth Kenneday and Susan Malmstrom strive to achieve between viewers and their series, Women of the Forest. Familiar metaphors provide a narrative that readers can filter through their own cumulative life experiences. The series evolved through the artists’ shared interest in fairy tales, feminism, and the disappearing wilderness. Fantasy elements woven throughout the images allow them to explore unsettling content in a compelling fashion.
Once upon a time, fairy tales weren’t meant just for children. An oral tradition of fables and folklore, they were passed down through many generations constituting a vital communal experience. They continue to resonate, by virtue of their archetypal imagery, despite the near extinction of the oral storytelling tradition, replaced in the 21st century by a universal mass communication network and a global culture largely steeped in twenty-four-hour public entertainment. Yet after hundreds of years, modern and contemporary writers such as Anne Sexton and Angela Carter mine the ancient tales, creating a dialogue between personal and collective memory.

JANE’S PARTY at Argyle Fine Art
Doors open 8pm / Show begins at 8:30pm
Tickets are $8 advance/ $10 at the door
Every now and then one stumbles upon a group that makes your toes tap and yearn for summer! That is what Jane’s Party did for us the first time they sent us their music in the dead of winter. Well…finally summer is finally here and so is Jane’s Party this Friday, August 7th at Argyle Fine Art! Despite hailing from Toronto, Jane's Party has been described as a very Oceanside folk-pop sound that is wonderfully chill with just enough pizzazz… with their country flair and use of harmonicas. Please come join in the fun and experience LIVE music and ART….it’s a wonderful place to hear and see, if we do say so ourselves. But don’t take our word for it…come experience it for yourself! Tickets are just $8 and you can reserve some now by phoning the gallery at 902-425-9456.
These energetic, creative young musicians recently received rave reviews at the North by North East music and film festival in Toronto this past June. Enjoy this very creative video by Jane’s Party: HERE
Jane's Party is a Toronto based band, who have gained recognition for their fresh approach to Canadian Roots music. 'The Garage Sessions' is Jane's Party's first full-length album. It was conceived and influenced by their summer 2008, East Coast tour of Canada, which saw them playing full electric shows or simply busking at every opportune moment. It is Jane's Party's attitude and willingness to grow as musicians that make them a valuable entity to today's music scene.

MUSIC INSPIRES ART at Argyle Fine Art
Emerging Singer-Songwriter CARMEL MIKOL INSPIRES VISUAL ARTISTS JAMES NEISH and MARLA BENTON WITH HER ORIGINAL LYRICS.
COME SEE THE RESULTS and HEAR THE SHOW
THURSDAY, JULY 23, 2009- 8pm. Tickets are $8 NOW or $10 at the door
Argyle Fine Art hosts Halifax-based singer/songwriter Carmel Mikol for its monthly music series “Sight on Sound” on Thursday, July 23rd. Taking the “Sight on Sound” theory quite literally, the show features Mikol’s performance and a display of works by artists Marla Benton (ceramics) and James Neish (painting) that are inspired by Mikol’s lyrics and created specifically for this event. The show begins at 8pm, presale at $8 or $10 tickets available at the door at Argyle Fine Art.
“This is what art is made for,” Mikol says, “interpretation and re-interpretation.” Rich with lyrical imagery and narrative content, Mikol’s music provides no shortage of material for the artists. “When I listen to it, I can't stop thinking about road trips or long lonely train rides,” says artist James Neish. His piece reflects themes of “transition and romanticizing loss.” The songs also inspired Marla Benton, whose recent work in ceramics features hand-painted text, making it a perfect fit for the project.
Carmel Mikol has quickly gained recognition as a skilled songwriter and engaging performer. This summer she embarks on a cross-Canada tour with Kim Wempe and releases her debut full-length album “In My Bones” in September. Listen to her music here: FACEBOOK FANPAGE and MYSPACE

As always, someone will be going home this week voted on by the panel of judges Gary Markle, Wendy Friedman, and Lisa Drader-Murphy and guest judge this week, Anna Gilkerson from: www.deuxfm.com

New Ceramic Work by Wendy Shirran comes to life with Miyako Ballesteros Japanese Floral Arrangements
Please join Argyle Fine Art this Saturday afternoon, June 6th, 2pm-5pm for a special showcase of Ikebana works by Miyako Ballesteros and Ceramic works by Wendy Shirran. Show continues until June 10th.
Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement. But it is more than simply putting flowers in a container, ikebana is “ a disciplined art form in which nature and humanity are brought together. Contrary to the idea of floral arrangement as a collection of particolored or multicolored arrangement of blooms, ikebana often emphasizes other areas of the plant, such as its stems and leaves, and draws emphasis towards shape, line, form.”
Ceramic artist Wendy Shirran from Turnstile Pottery has worked in collaboration with Miyako Ballestersos and her students to create the perfect vessel for each arrangement.

WRITE on a NAPKIN for our Friend Sandra Winter who is still waiting for her lung transplant…
Sandra Winter needs some cheering up, so why not get some cheering happening on a napkin. Quite simple really….since so many good ideas first start as scribblings on a napkin and everyone has these …let’s all write a little something on a napkin. Any kind will do. Perhaps while you are on a coffee break or after dinner. It can be a joke, a quick hello, words of wisdom, a smiley face. Whatever you fancy!
Then bring them into Argyle Fine Art by May 2nd ( or mail them to us at the below address) and we will send them all off to Sandra. If you live at a distance, we can give you an address so you can send your napkin. The more the merrier with this, so pass this message along to anyone you think can help out. If you are a media person, please spread the word in your own way as well. Blog it, facebook it, website it....and THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!
We are asking that if possible if you can make a $2 donation upon dropping off your napkin, that would be great. That money will be used to send along extra treats of great cheering factor.

”These are like spirits who each work their own magic on me, more like 'this one is at work in my ambitions' and it's much more specific to my own life than a general representation of an emotion we all feel.As I've been working on them, it's clear that they are all depicting the things I struggle with - these seem to be the ones that ask to be drawn - and as such they all have a dark or troubling tone to one degree or another. “
Artist Geoffrey Grantham, younger brother of Mark Grantham, is excited to be having his first show with Argyle Fine Art. Recent subject matter include seascapes, with their various moods, and ice scapes, with their illusive shapes and colors. Geoffrey has been busy painting in all sorts of weather throughout this cold winter and sporatic spring, to bring you RITUAL. Geoffrey talks about his where the title for the show derived from:

“The expression "ritual" describes the act of painting on location (plein air). I find painting in nature to be deeply spiritual. This combines the elements of meditation, worship and the ritual act of rendering the scene with conviction. When I start to work I enter a different zone, a sort of sacred space. Painting plein air year round has become a compelling and rewarding experience."
UNtil April 14th
Extended until April 14th!!!

at the next SIGHT ON SOUND series at Argyle Fine Art

Argyle Fine Art is pleased to bring you the fifth concert from our ongoing music series SIGHT ON SOUND on Thursday, April 2nd 8pm-10:30pm. This time we are happy to present an innovative presentation and collaboration of audiovisual improvisation, featuring composer Chuck Blazevic and media artist Joanne Kerrigan. The concept for the evening is rooted in the rich tradition of combining previously independent music and images but will be unique as both the music and the visuals will be rendered live by the artists, their ultimate forms created “on the fly”.
Tickets are on sale now…call to reserve yours today or drop by Argyle Fine Art. Tickets are $8 advance and $10 at the door. IF YOU WERE at Argyle Fine Art during Nocturne you may remember Chuck from that evening....Hear a sample of his music:

Here are some samples of film work by Joanne Kerrigan: HERE
Composer Chuck Blazevic will be opening with selections from his 'Dreamsploitation' catalog. The feature half of the evening will showcase the premier of a multi-layered guitar composition. The latter is written for three guitars, which Chuck will perform in its entirety with the aid of live recording and playback. "Adriana had talked about a performance where the audience is in some way witness to the composition process," said Chuck. "So, I wrote a guitar trio that I will be building from the ground up by recording each solo part and combining the subsequent layers with playback from the recorded sections. I am looking forward to exposing the individual layers of our work through this process-oriented approach."
Joanne Kerrigan has assembled a collection of clips which she has extracted from a wide variety of sources including films, video art, promotional spots for television or musical artists, and her own footage from projects she’s created over the years. She will be presenting the clips in sequences and layers to create a visual tapestry that will complement Chuck’s performance.
“I don’t know exactly what will make it to the screen and what won’t, but I have tried to keep the clip bin manageable for this show,” she said. “Choosing what to exclude was so difficult, because I don’t have anything that I don’t love in some way. But I tried to stick with the clips I felt offered the most arresting imagery, the most astounding things to look at. And of course that work with, in my opinion, Chuck’s sounds.”
Blazevic's Dreamsploitation debut, The Soft Focus Sound of Today, has received favorable reviews from select international publications, in addition to making the 'Best Albums of 2008' list at Textura.org. Blazevic's past collaborations include live guitarist with The Heavy Blinkers, remix author on Ruth Minnikin's forthcoming album Depend on This, and film composer for four films by director Michael Fox. Kerrigan has been working in film and video in Halifax since 1999, creating award-winning works that have received international attention. She is currently preparing to shoot her eighth project, winner of the 2008 Joy Post award.

People working out, wedding pictures, collective myths, an elephant walking down the street, fat people eating huge sandwiches, rich people eating at the openings, the stadium, the baseball game, the Italian-American religious procession in east Harlem, jazz musicians, naked people on the beach, kids diving from a tall pole, "beachy fires" in Africa, old people walking, old people dancing, a horse carried by a vespa...
