"I’ve always suspected that the freshly primed canvas is not just a stark white surface; or that it is simply an object fashioned and prepared by the artist for the execution of an image. On the contrary, as metaphor it serves the artist’s psychological frame of reference - it could be there are chapters, books, libraries, civilizations hidden within those material threads per square inch. Threads which serve as a conduit for our artistic excursions."
"With this in mind, one might also conclude that buildings, or a landscape site, metaphorically contain aspirations and continuum; characteristics essential to the artist as observer. In my case, a preoccupation with regional structures, museums and a certain natural phenomenon have inspired me to paint what I believe is utilitarian, beautiful, old and new, aspiring yet grounded. These paintings feature the landscape of memory; an imagist’s response to subjects both contemplative and at times suggestive of elemental grandeur." - Steven Rhude
