In 2003 until the present, he has shown regularly at Argyle Fine Art in Halifax. His work, while always grounded in a representational style, has explored a variety of subjects and techniques ranging from meticulously detailed landscapes and figures, to more recently, monochromatic minimalist landscapes and seascapes, and to some of his recent work in which he has been exploring a more painterly approach using thicker paint to portray forest scenes. The Nova Scotian Landscape and Seascape often serve as an emotional starting point as he paints images that he remembers of places visited, or dreamed. He does not consider himself a formal landscape painter as he chooses the comfort of the studio and to use his imagination as reference for these works, as opposed to the discipline of painting on location, or with the use of photography. These works are not a thorough examination of the natural world but more of a sketch, a brainstorm that becomes filled in later and, where the absence of objects, colour, light, or backgrounds are often offset by the mystery of shadows, or suggested or limited elements

November 22nd, 2pm to 5pm

PUTTING ON THE RITZ!
with
SPARKLE AND SHINE for SANDRA WINTER

Join us at Argyle Fine Art as friends and perfect strangers come together to help a person in need with a very special jewellery sale, SPARKLE AND SHINE for SANDRA on Sunday, November 22nd, 2pm-5pm, with all the proceeds going to assist Sandra Winter as she recovers from her recent life-saving surgery: a double lung transplant! Come buy some great gifts for people on your lists for the holiday at affordable prices. We'll have tasty treats and music to entertain you while you browse the beautiful jewels ranging from costume jewellery to locally, handmade, original pieces!

COME SEE US AT THE NOVA SCOTIA DESIGNER CRAFT COUNCIL Christmas Market this weekend (Nov. 19-22) for more information or to make a donation. If you are able to help with volunteering at the booth at the market, please get in touch as well.

Sandra Winter is known to many within the fine art and craft communities from the good work she did for artists, while working at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia years ago. She recently received a gift of LIFE...a second double lung transplant and is now still quite literally fighting with all of her might to get through the aftermath of surgery....exciting surgery! Two new lungs are breathing and getting well adjusted to their new life, all things considered. But there is much mending and once she gets out of the hospital she will need special care not covered by our province, so we all thought we should start helping with a recovery fund of sorts.

We have asked folks, even like yourself if you can help out, to dig deep within your jewellery boxes to find and donate jewellery that is no longer "you" or perhaps something you have made. Then all the jewellery will be priced at fair prices determined by you, with all the proceeds going to Sandra.

To donate or get more information, see the contact options for the gallery (link on the right). PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!

Temple of the Mind : Steven Rhude

Steven Rhude explores pushing the boundaries between rural vs urban, traditional vs contemporary, private and public spaces for art to dwell.

"I’ve always suspected that the freshly primed canvas is not just a stark white surface; or that it is simply an object fashioned and prepared by the artist for the execution of an image. On the contrary, as metaphor it serves the artist’s psychological frame of reference - it could be there are chapters, books, libraries, civilizations hidden within those material threads per square inch. Threads which serve as a conduit for our artistic excursions."

"With this in mind, one might also conclude that buildings, or a landscape site, metaphorically contain aspirations and continuum; characteristics essential to the artist as observer. In my case, a preoccupation with regional structures, museums and a certain natural phenomenon have inspired me to paint what I believe is utilitarian, beautiful, old and new, aspiring yet grounded. These paintings feature the landscape of memory; an imagist’s response to subjects both contemplative and at times suggestive of elemental grandeur." - Steven Rhude
